Robotic surgery is on the forefront of surgical innovation and Dr. Savoca has pioneered its application here in Northern Virginia. While enthusiasm for this 3D High-def version of conventional laparoscopic surgery has proven advantages in other surgical procedures, it has only recently been applied to colon and rectal surgery. The main advantage of robotics is the ability to perform precise suturing in confined spaces lending itself nicely to a procedure known as trans-anal excision. Dr. Savoca’s performance of this procedure enabled a young man who had been offered radical surgery by other local colorectal surgeons, avoid a permanent colostomy without any external incision.
